New Delhi, September 24:
The global concerns surrounding AI risks echoed at the UN Security Council on Wednesday when leaders of world's leading artificial intelligence firms called for heightened vigilance to regulate the increasingly powerful technology.
The heads of major AI firms, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei briefed the 15-member council at an emergency meeting.
The meeting comes amid mounting global concerns about the risks of the technology and repeated calls for a slowdown along with warnings that AI systems could soon slip beyond human control.
Altman said that AI systems could move faster than institutions if not controlled. He also urged governments to work with each other and the industry on decisions shaping the future of the rapidly evolving technology.
Anthropic's CEO Amodei warned that fast-expanding technology could be a risk to humanity as a whole. He pledged to slow down where needed to ensure the safety of new releases.
They called for the world to make sure that the power of AI isn't concentrated in one company or country.
The UN meeting unfolded as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington for a much-anticipated state visit. AI interests are looking to what comes out of Xi's discussions with US President Donald Trump.
While the two leading powers in AI development are jostling for dominance, they have taken different approaches to oversight.
President Trump has rejected international regulation of the technology, while China has imposed rules governing AI algorithms and training data
