Jammu, September 3,

Jammu Division of Northern Railway collected Rs 56.46 lakh in fines from passengers during an intensive ticket-checking drive conducted across the division in August, officials said.

During the month-long drive, railway staff detected 8,106 cases involving ticketless and irregular travel, as well as unbooked excess luggage. A total fine of Rs 56,46,615 was recovered from the passengers.

The checking was conducted at major railway stations, including Jammu, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan, Kathua, Pathankot Cantt, Budgam and Srinagar, besides various Mail, Express and special trains passing through the division.

Officials said the drive was aimed not merely at revenue generation but also at ensuring safe, smooth and comfortable journeys for passengers while promoting railway discipline.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal, said the achievement was the result of the dedication and continuous efforts of the ticket-checking staff.

He said the objective was not only to take punitive action against violators but also to make passengers aware of the need to purchase valid tickets before commencing their journey. He added that such intensive ticket-checking drives would continue regularly.

The Jammu Division appealed to passengers to travel only with valid tickets and cooperate with railway authorities during ticket checks.
